Pvt Putnam (Co. F, 14th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry) was killed 7 April 1862 and buried at the foot of an oak tree where he fell. His name was marked on the tree. Whilst his body was later moved to the national cemetery, a stone cast of the tree stump and the engraving was made to mark the spot.
