The five hours of the Battle of Franklin, 30 November 1864, saw some of the most intense and brutal fighting of the American Civil War. The Confederates' assault on the Union's works around the town cost them over 1750 dead, including 6 generals, and around 3800 casualites. Union losses were around 189 dead and over 1000 wounded (and around 1100 captured). Sadly, the only thing that remains today is the Carter House and its outbuildings. Note the bulletmarks.
